"Who are Boss Level?"
We create games. Specifically we create games for Facebook, which you can play both online and via your mobile phone. We also play a lot of games but I doubt you're interested in what we do in our spare time.
We're not really into barriers preventing people from playing games (hence the choice of Facebook as a platform and the fact that you'll be able to play our games for free) so all our games are browser-based with no plug-ins or downloads required. We only utilise open-web standards.
Finally, we're also passionate about the video games industry itself, the explosive growth it's seeing and the possibilities it offers as a new medium for expression, social interaction and learning.
At this point, you're probably looking for the Projects tab, trying to see what we've done and what we're working on at the moment. Well sadly we can't tell you because a) we're a start-up and we're just in the process of completing the first project and b) we'd have to kill you. Or get you to sign an NDA (your choice). Remember, everyone has to start somewhere, and all good things come to those who wait, which in this case should be about two months.
"What's a Boss Level?"
Well a 'boss' is usually the toughest enemy you'll face in a video game and when you come to fight them (during a 'boss battle' or 'boss level'), you'll find that the pace of the action is ratcheted up and everything is generally bigger and better. At the same time, to create a truly memorable boss battle/denouement to the game, the game design also needs to be smarter and better (and not just a big guy in a big courtyard).
We chose the name because it defines the style and approach we're seeking to take. The big difference though is that we want to do this throughout our games and not just at the end. If you still don't get it, here's a quote:
"Can you do anything for me?"
Well firstly, yes we are for hire. Not to create games; TBH we've got too many ideas and too much on our plate to develop for other people. However, we'd love to come and talk to you for a few hours, for example, on how to incorporate an element of gaming into your digital brand strategy. We can also throw in some trending and prediction information if you ask nicely :)
As it happens, we haven't always been game designers and producers - we used to have 'serious' jobs. Some of these jobs were in IT sales, some in IT techno-geekery and some in marketing and new media. In marketing-speak, you can say that "we combine extensive business experience in the cold hard realities of the information technology business with the passion and flair of digital media expression and marketing". In nerd-speak, you could break it down as:
- Mobile
- Smartphone apps, iPhone, Android, all that jazz
- SMS/MMS Marketing including the promotion of personalisation and interaction as key business drivers
- Bluetooth/WIFI touch-points and localised event promotion
- Web
- Business models, modes of engagement and how to utilise the opportunities afforded by digital distribution
- Social networking/gaming and general Weborrhea 2.0
- The 2nd Screen
- Console - Both Sony and Microsoft have expressed their desire to have their consoles at the heart of the modern home. What are the opportunities emerging as this generation of consoles become true entertainment hubs and what will it mean to be able to directly reach into people's living space
- TV - Set-top boxes are getting smarter and that red button is very easy to press
"Anything else I should know?"
If you're into mission statements:
If you want a much more in-depth idea of what we're aiming for, then check out this excellent article by the creator of Canabalt (an innovative Indie game) - it was written completely independently of Boss Level yet when we read it, we thought "Wow - he's got Boss Level nailed !"
We're based in London, living the east-end/Shoreditch dream - yep, we're another start-up near the Silicon Roundabout!
